Is it wrong to not want to accept a job cause you feel cleaning toilets is degrading?

I've been looking for a summer job for 2 months now. I've been getting pretty desperate and time is running out. Recently I have been offered a retail job. In addition to the regular customer service, they also want me to sweep floors and clean toilets. Is it wrong to not accept this job offer cause you feel that cleaning toilets is degrading? Am I being too picky or am I right to have standards?

I clean toilets everyday, and I don't even get paid for it.
Reply:Well I used to be an office clerk and I did translations. then I moved to another country and I worked at a supermarket as the in store cleaner and I also was in charge of cleaning the customers toilets and the staff toilets.. then I worked at the university and was a night shift cleaner and I cleaned all the classrooms and auditorium, kitchens and all the male and female students toilets. and then I thought I go and study to become a health care worker and i did that and now I take care of mentally or physically disabled people but I did not find it degrading to clean toilets.. It was hard to adjust to working nights.. x but you can set your standards higher.. you don't have to do this.. the question is how urgently do you need money.. if you find a better job then by all means aim for something higher or go to evening school to get a certificate or a degree in something else and that will definitely be a bonus to find better work than .. cleaning toilets.
Reply:A job is a job. Have you ever seen Mike Rowe with Dirty Jobs? I would rather clean a toilet than do some of the jobs that Mike Rowe encounters.

I clean the toilet at my job and I work with fast food. I do not find it degrading because I would rather have a clean bathroom than a dirty bathroom. Sometimes we all have to do things we don't want to do!
Reply:I understand how you feel, but when push comes to shove, sometimes you just have to suck it up and do what you have to do until something better comes along.

Besides...it builds character. Seriously.

Just listen to your ipod and consider it mindless work where you don't have to take anyone's crap - you just have to clean it! (with gloves, of course!~lol)

And it's good practice for if you ever have kids.

You need the job. It's only temporary.
Reply:I once told myself that I would never work in food service, but eventually I did because we all have to pay the bills, and it wasn't that bad.

Cleaning toilets isn't as bad as you might think... my Daddy is a janitor and has been for over 20 years -- he makes his living (which is a lot, btw) cleaning toilets -- sure it's not glam, but it's a job and it's something to move up from.

Take the job, you might surprize yourself!

Reply:u have a right to personal standards as long as u are not jeopardizing financial obligations, but keep in mind u have to start somewhere
Reply:I wouldn't do it, but if you are desperate for work you do what you gotta do as they say
Reply:You have your point. If they can get a cleaning lady to do the dirty work so much the better.
