I have an interview for administrator and on the job spec they expect me to clean the loos, is this normal?

It also says I have to clean all the crockery at the end of the day! is this really normal.

I work for a very small company, and whilst we obviously do have a cleaner, the receptionist is expected to take on a variety of cleaning chores.

As an example, we have clients coming in all during the day. The cleaner comes at the end of the day. If, for example, someone had had an "accident" in the loos during the day, then unfortunately the receptionist would be expected to deal with it rather than leaving it all day for clients to witness. (I'd hope that if it was a staff member that had done it, they'd clean up after themselves, but when there are visitors they won't clean up.)

Similarly, we do have a dishwasher and the cleaner is expected, at the end of the day, to load the dishwasher, turn it on and then empty it again. But in general, the receptionist ends up loading the dishwasher a couple of times throughout the day because everyone just leaves stuff lying around.

So, I'd explore this further. Are you really expected to clean the loos, or are you just expected to "maintain" them during the day?

Rule of thumb is, the smaller the company, the more you will be expected to muck in and help with things like this. If you don't want to do it, go and work for a bigger company where they will have designated cleaning staff. But I work for a small company and I really enjoy it, and I think there are a lot of good things about it.
Reply:Not normal but they can do it if they want. I feel your pain - I am currently an office administrator and I am expected to check that there is a constant supply of loo roll, hand towels, and handwash. We have a cleaner for crying out loud - why can't she do it??
Reply:I'd jog it on luv and find something else.. Toilet cleaning is for the well cleaners to do.
Reply:it gets rid of those who put pride before wealth and food.
Reply:They are probably just trying to get all the jobs done with everyone mucking in. If it is a problem for you. Do not go for it.
Reply:In all my years as an Administrator (and similiar roles) - 16 years and counting) - I have NEVER been asked or expected to clean the loos and other peoples crockery.

They are probably to tight financially to employ a cleaner who's duties include loo cleaning.
Reply:Whatever the job description is, is what you would have to do if hired. I guess they can put any chore on that list they want to, since they are the boss. However, I wouldn't expect for those things to be on that list. I would expect that to come under the heading of Janitorial.
Reply:No this is not normal....
Reply:Nope - an administrator deal with administration. A cleaner deals with cleaning toilets and crockery. Either don't bother going to the interview, or be prepared not to get the job when you tell them you are applying for a job as a paper pusher.
Reply:No it is not normal. And if those are the things they're up-front about, what are the the things they're going to spring on you when you're in post, because there's always something...!
Reply:Count yourself lucky that they mentioned it BEFORE you got the job. I admire their honesty.

Think of it this way - they dare not fire you cos who would clean the loo? Job security!

Someone has to clean the loo. I've done my fair share.
Reply:It is sexist. The 'Administrator' is likely to be a woman (Secretary), so make her do the cleaning as well!

Whatever this company is...they are sh*t.

Find something else.
Reply:No it isn't, it sounds like the job spec for an all-round dogsbody!
Reply:sorry, but HELL NO. if you qualify for that job, you prob have surpassed cleaning toliets. sorry i cleaned toliets in college WILL NOT do it again.
Reply:Cari has it right. But if your job is with a large company then things might be different.

Check if you will be sharing this task with others, perhaps on a rota basis.

I know of several office workers who look after the loos during the day as they have members of the public using them and they check on the paper etc. It is reasonable to ask the newer workers to take on this task, as most could not afford a cleaner to be around all day.

If you really want this job, don't let this put you off, soon someone else will be employed after you and they will get the job.

It also shows a willingness to be part of the team and do anything that helps with the smooth running of the office.

Sometimes we all have to do things we think are beneath us when we are working up the career ladder.
Reply:It looks like they are trying to get out of having to pay for a new administrator and a cleaner. So they are trying to combine both jobs. But they've got a cheek trying it on like that. Tell them to stick their toilet brush up their U bend.
