Is it my job to clean the mold from the apartment we're moving from?

I've been living at my apartment for a little over two years but I've never noticed the mold until I started packing up to move. Basically I moved my dresser and the wall behind it was covered with black mold. I'm moving out on Sunday and I don't know if I supposed to treat this stuff or just leave it to my apartment manager. Please help!

You are required to leave the place as clean as when you got it.
Reply:No its not. Your landlord is suppose to do that. Also, I had mold in my apartment and asked the management company to clean it and they did not. I contacted the Atty Gen Office and they gave me a letter to sue them. Black mold is hazardous. If you are pregnant, or ill that stuff can make you sicker, or worse. Let him do it. You did him a favor, by not calling the health department on him.
Reply:Molds can be a health hazard. If you do decide to clean it, be sure not to let it become air borne, like spraying it with Lysol, and avoiding fast movements.

If the manager charged you for the mold, you could take him to small claims court (if you would bother). The mold is not your fault, unless you've done something to increase the moisture in your apartment, like using humidifiers.
Reply:I'm quite sure you will lose all or part of your security deposit unless you take care of it. You'll probably have to paint over it, too...so better get to it.
Reply:Be careful with the word "Black mold", as it will scare people and it may not be black mold. Trying googling some websties to help you clean it up. I think bleach was effective. Real black mold only grows in damp spaces, you probalby have something else that is black and looks like mold.
Reply:more than likely, yes, you are responsible for the clean up. I'm guessing it wasn't there when you moved in.
Reply:I would discuss it with your apartment manager to see what their expectation is. You wouldn't want problems with them over something that could be easily rectified.

I wouldn't just ignore it though, for fear that they would try to hold part of your deposit as a result.

Have a good weekend!
